The Büchelberg ( 544  m above sea  level ) is a mountain in the Heckengäu . It is located in the municipality of Neuhausen im Enzkreis . The border with the Boeblingen district runs through the eastern flank of the mountain along the so-called Altwürttembergischen Landgraben , which at the beginning of the 17th century represented the border between Württemberg and Baden . Since 1939, an area of almost 50 hectares around the highest peak of the mountain has been designated as a nature reserve.

Location and surroundings

The Büchelberg represents the northernmost part of the Upper and Middle Muschelkalk in the area between the Nagold in the west and the Würm is in the east. From the strongly influenced by these rivers landscape, individual mountain tops, like the Büchelberg or about 800 meters southwest raise lying Kuppelzen ( 528  m above sea level ).

The closest village is Weil der Städtische district Münklingen , which is about 1.2 km southeast of the mountain already in the district of Böblingen . The district of Hausen , which also belongs to Weil der Stadt, is located 2 km east of the Büchelberg in the Würmtal valley, about 170 meters below. The municipality of Neuhausen , on whose marker the mountain lies, is located 2.5 km northwest of the Büchelberg and belongs to the Enzkreis . 1.5 km northwest of the mountain is the Tiefenbronn district of Lehningen , also in the Enzkreis. Its border with the Böblingen district runs through the eastern and southern flanks of the Büchelberg, which is 800 meters south-west of the mountain and the border with the Calw district , which creates a " three-country corner ".

Development

The district road K4561 runs from Neuhausen (Enzkreis) to Münklingen, 0.5 km southwest of the highest point of the Büchelberg . From there, the car park at the point designated as Büchelberg West can be reached, where there is one of the information boards that provide information about the nature reserve and the local juniper heath . This includes the entire high plateau of the mountain, which can be reached from there in a few minutes. The area is developed with numerous hiking trails and paths. 200 meters east of the highest point of the mountain is a lookout point known as Büchelberg Ost .

History and legends

The calcareous, barren soils on the Büchelberg never made intensive agriculture possible, the mountain was only usable as a sheep pasture. Since rare plant and animal species had settled there, the area was placed under nature protection as early as 1939. Since there was insufficient grazing until the 1960s, natural succession had already started and the forest had begun to reclaim this area. In order to preserve the juniper heather, the pasture areas were reactivated and leased again. Smaller quarries still bear witness to the quarrying of stones, which took place on Büchelberg until the 1960s.

The district boundary running over the mountain represents the former "Landgraben", which can still be seen in many places due to the former ramparts and trenches. This line is identical here with the Württemberg-Baden state border established at the beginning of the 17th century. Peter Goessler suspects that the purpose of the facility was subject to changes throughout history. It seems certain to him that it already existed before the Palatinate Wars of Succession (1688–1697). He is still certain that the country's great defense line was included and connected to the so-called Eppinger Lines . He also suspects that the moat already served as a fortification during the Thirty Years' War and played a role in the warlike events of the Battle of Wimpfen (1922). However, it seems certain to him that the facility was not originally a military fortification, but largely a state border. The research is based on the construction of several Landgraben lines in Württemberg in the second half of the 15th century. This was built according to the model of the imperial city country huts .

According to a legend, a bloodcurdling scream from a black raven was heard on the Büchelberg. The sight of this bird is said to have brought death, which is why it was called the bird of the dead . Why this bird haunted this area is unknown.
