The community energy Rhein Main eG (short BERMeG ) is a community energy cooperative to which a community of citizens in the Rhine-Main area has partnered. The guiding principle of these citizens and thus of BERMeG is to make the energy supply in the Rhine-Main area 100% renewable in the long term. To this end, it builds and operates electricity and heat generation plants based on renewable energies , participates in distribution networks and sells electricity and heat generated to end consumers. The close cooperation with the city of Mörfelden-Walldorf, from which u. a. 100% CO 2 -neutral energy supplies for urban buildings have emerged and are considered exemplary far beyond the region. history

In 2012 it was founded by 27 members after just two and a half months of preparation with three photovoltaic systems . In 2013 there was an expansion to eight photovoltaic systems, almost 100 members.

The restrictive interpretation of the Capital Investment Code by the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) put a brake on further investments in 2014, only one more photovoltaic system was built. For this, the commitment began in the new business field "Electricity sales to end consumers", the BERMeG became a member of the Bürgerwerke . The first heat center with combined heat and power unit (CHP) was built in 2015 in the community center Mörfelden, the electricity and heat generated are used in the building. In cooperation with the Bürgerwerke, an own green electricity tariff was offered for the first time, which comes from 100% renewable sources.

In 2016, the first wood pellet heating system was built for a daycare center in the Walldorf district ; 2017 participation in the network property company Mörfelden-Walldorf.

This was followed in 2018 by an area power and heat supply for three buildings (including a day-care center) on the basis of a combined heat and power unit, nine charging stations for electric cars in Mörfelden-Walldorf and the 13th photovoltaic system and the like. a. to supply one of the electric charging stations. In summer 2018, preparations began for the Walldorf district, a heating network based on a wood chip boiler and heat collectors for around 1100 people.

Merger with EG-Ried

At the end of 2018, the merger with the energy cooperative Ried eG (EG-Ried) was initiated. An energy cooperative with around 300 members is being created under the name BürgerEnergieRheinMain.

For this purpose, EG-Ried decided to dissolve it on December 3, 2018. The members of EG-Ried will join BERMeG and the systems will be sold to BERMeG. On January 23, 2019, BERMeG changed its statutes in order to be able to accept members of the EG-Ried on comparable terms. Manfred Keller was also elected to the supervisory board and Gerfried Schmidt was appointed to the management board.

Like the majority of citizens 'energy cooperatives , BERMeG claims to pursue the goal of a decentralized and ecological energy supply from citizens' hands . It enables members to take climate protection , regionality and sustainability into their own hands. Here, the BERMeG in the long-term goal of the energy supply in the oriented region Rhein-Main to make 100% renewable. Like every company , it works economically , but always under the condition of sustainability.

Investments and investments

According to its own information, BERMeG operates 14 photovoltaic systems , two combined heat and power plants and two wood pellet heating centers (as of June 2019). It also has a 5% stake in the network property company Mörfelden-Walldorf, which in turn owns the electricity and gas network of the city ​​of Mörfelden-Walldorf.

In spring 2018, the BERMeG Moerfelden-Walldorf built on nine publicly accessible locations charging stations , on which each one electric car can be charged. In addition, there is an electric car sharing car at each of these locations, operated by the company mobileeee as part of the KOMEKAN pilot project funded by the State of Hesse . Mörfelden-Walldorf thus has the largest number of e-charging stations in the citizenry in Germany.

The close cooperation with the city of Mörfelden-Walldorf is seen far beyond the Rhine-Main region as an exemplary model for cooperation between energy cooperatives and municipalities.

The Hessian Minister of Economics Tarek Al-Wazir described the combined heat / power supply for 3 buildings as a “successful project in the state of Hesse”. Here, by means of co-generation by a heat and power cogeneration generated which consume the inhabitants of an existing building for Elderly appropriate housing, a new building social housing as well as the users of a KITA. The power supply is based on the tenant electricity model .

Financing model

BERMeG finances its investments through the business shares of its members as well as subordinated loans that members also give.

Since the first full financial year 2013, BERMeG has been able to generate profit every year (as of 2019).

The BERMeG board has been working on a voluntary basis since it was founded.

Awards

  • In spring 2015, BERMeG received the environmental owl from the BUND district association Groß-Gerau.
  • BERMeG can indirectly feel honored as a member of the Bürgerwerke through the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative Prize 2015 in the category “Ecological Action”, which was awarded to the Bürgerwerke and its member cooperatives.
  • With the fifth award of the “Werkstatt N” quality seal , the Council for Sustainable Development honored the Bürgerwerke project and, at this point in time, the BERMeG, which were already 50 energy cooperatives.

Cultural engagement

  • With the photovoltaic system built on the roof of the Mayor Klingler School in the Mörfelden district in 2013 , renewable energies are also made visible to primary school students.
