Baalborn is a district of the Rhineland-Palatinate community of Mehlingen . It was an independent community until 1939 and again from 1949 to 1969.

location

Ballborn is about two kilometers northwest of the core community at the transition from the Palatinate Forest to the North Palatinate Bergland in the Mehlinger Heide . The latter is one of the largest contiguous heathland areas in all of southern Germany. The Otterberg Forest extends to the west of the settlement area

history

Baalborn was first mentioned in a document in 1656. The village itself grew out of a single farm. It belonged to the Electoral Palatinate until the end of the 18th century and was subordinate to the Lautern Oberamt .

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Baalborn was incorporated into the Canton of Otterberg . In 1815 the place first belonged to Austria . A year later he moved to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 he was a member of the Land Commissioner in Kaiserslautern ; from this the district office of Kaiserslautern emerged.

In 1928 Baalborn had 451 residents who lived in 82 residential buildings. At that time the Protestants belonged to the parish of Sembach , the Protestants to that of Enkenbach . From 1939 the place was part of the district of Kaiserslautern . In the same year, the previously independent community of Baalborn was dissolved and incorporated into the neighboring community of Mehlingen together with Neukirchen. After the Second World War , Baalborn became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . During this time, efforts began within the districts of Baalborn and Neukirchen aimed at separating from the community of Mehlingen. While Neukirchen did not succeed in doing this, Baalborn regained independence in 1949, although the mayor's office in Mehlingen remained the seat of administration and provided the joint mayor. In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , the municipality of Baalborn lost its independence again on June 7, 1969, after the municipality of Mehlingen was re-established from the municipalities of Mehlingen and Baalborn.

Field names

Some references to the past of the place are given by old field names.

The “Glashütte path” points to the Drehenthalerhof belonging to the town of Otterberg , where glass was previously made. “Hertwieß” is a former “hurdle meadow”, a collection point for sheep that is fenced in with hurdles . The "Heidenhübel", which is popularly called "Härehewel", was a prehistoric grave or cult site. "Am Mooracker" was swampy terrain until it was drained. The bath "Münch head" on the mountain "monk's head" called belonged to the monastery Ottersberg .
