Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is a flagellated bacterium of the genus Bacillus . It is the source of the Bam HI - restriction enzyme and synthesized natural antibiotic barnase .

features

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is a gram-positive , rod-shaped, mobile, peritrich flagellated, 0.7 to 0.9 µm × 1.8 to 3 µm large bacterium that often occurs in chains. Like all bacteria of the genus Bacillus, B. amyloliquefaciens is an aerobically growing endosporer , the spores are elliptical. The optimal temperature range for growth is 30 to 40 ° C, below 15 ° C and above 50 ° C it does not grow. The Voges-Proskauer reaction is positive and it reduces nitrate to nitrite .

history

B. amyloliquefaciens was discovered by Japanese scientist Fukumoto in 1943. Until 1987, its status as a separate species was controversial and it was considered a subspecies of Bacillus subtilis .

use

Several strains of the subspecies B. amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum are manufactured industrially. The strain FZB 42 is used as a soil additive. QST 713 is approved as a plant protection product in the European Union, Germany, Austria and Switzerland . D747 is approved in Italy.
