action

Northern Spain 1978. The two British couples Paul and Isabel as well as Norman and Lucy are on vacation. Paul bought his grandmother's house a year earlier near a remote village in a forest and converted it to live there with Isabel in the future. His former business partner Norman and his wife Lucy came along to spend a few days in the house with them. They hope to repair their troubled relationship after a miscarriage . During a short rest at the local inn, they are viewed with suspicion by the locals.

The following day Paul and Norman go hunting, which the latter is visibly uncomfortable. They discover a neglected and completely frightened girl with deformed hands in a secluded, locked shed , who has apparently been locked up there for a long time. It doesn't speak and just moves on all fours. Norman, who does not like to intervene in the course of events, finally agrees to take the girl with him so that the incident can be reported to the police as soon as possible.

The next morning there are four men with dogs in front of the house. The leader Paco and his three brothers (Lechón, Antonio and Miguel) claim to be looking for a missing girl from the village. Paul realizes that they want to take control of the girl again. He fled forward and offered his help in the search, which the brothers were reluctant to accept. In the meantime, Norman is supposed to bring the girl to safety. After a while the search party splits up: Now Paul is alone with Paco.

While Norman hesitates and leaves the house to weigh up the next steps nearby, Lechón and Antonio return to the house and threaten the two women. To finally be left alone, Isabel confesses that the girl is upstairs in the house. That doesn't stop Lechón from rape Lucy. Before that happens, Norman, who has just not been able to shoot a rabbit, returns in time and shoots Lechón, who has meanwhile let go of Lucy. Antonio, the youngest of the four brothers, escapes without the girl.

In the forest it becomes clear that the girl is the result of an incestuous relationship and the girl pays for the sins of others. Paul is knocked down by Miguel, who suddenly appears. Shortly thereafter, he manages to escape, with Miguel shooting behind him and injuring him. After Paul kills first the dog and then Miguel, Paco confronts him. A shot is fired.

In the pouring rain, Norman, Lucy and Isabel leave the house with the girl and wander through the forest in search of help. When it gets dark, they finally reach a neighboring village. Here they are taken with a young woman and her father. Norman remains suspicious and wakes up in the night to see Paco and Antonio approaching the house. Norman grabs the girl and tries to escape with her through the back door, where he meets Antonio and shoots him. Finally he and Paco face each other and threaten each other with their guns. Paco asks Norman to give him his daughter. She can tear herself away from Norman and seeks protection from her father, who calms her down with a metal music box, the crank of which she can also operate with her deformed hands. Lucy begs Norman to lower the gun like Paco. But Norman shoots - missed. The girl is still lying in her father's arms and the sounds of the music box that she continues to wind continue to sound. The homeowner arrives with his rifle and asks both men to accompany him to the Guardia Civil .

criticism

"What on the surface uses the conventions of common horror films turns out to be a clever and exciting psychological thriller in which the good-bad classifications are reduced to absurdity."

“The work of the Spaniard Koldo Serra is not original. As an homage to Peckinpah's " Who sows violence " and the "Backwoods" genre, the oppressive, well-played film - despite the small hangers - is successful. "
