The vehicles of type IV , from 1868 type IIb old , of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways were the last steam locomotives in Baden with the 1A1 wheel arrangement.
The long boiler machines were equipped with two internal fork frames, external cylinders and overhanging standing kettles . it was a standard gauge locomotive adapted to the broad gauge. They had a relatively small grate in relation to the evaporation heating surface. Since the evaporation space was generally very small, the locomotive tended to spit out unevaporated water. This error could be eliminated by a small design change (collecting bulge with discharge).
The locomotives were stationed in Heidelberg and Mannheim, where they proved their worth in operation. The load distribution was also better solved compared to the stephenson's predecessor model II .
For the re-gauging to standard gauge in 1854, the axle sequence 1B was initially intended, but this was not implemented.
The vehicles had a Tender of type 3 T 3.78.
