The Brixen train station ( Stazione di Bressanone in Italian , Stazion de Persenon in Ladin ) is located on the Brenner Railway in South Tyrol . As the train station of one of the most important urban centers in South Tyrol, Brixen has the third highest number of passengers in the country.

location

The train station is located in Brixen , the third largest city in South Tyrol and the capital of the Eisack Valley . It is located at 571  m above sea level on the mountain slope a little southwest of the city center, which can be quickly reached from here. Due to its location on the A22 and SS 12 as well as the intersection of the Eisack and Pustertal valleys, Brixen is an important traffic junction.

history

The Brixen station was put into operation in 1867 along with the entire section of the Brenner Railway between Innsbruck and Bolzano . It was laid out in a slightly elevated position, as the route between Franzensfeste and Brixen had to overcome 170 meters in altitude over a length of around nine kilometers. The importance of the station was somewhat diminished by the fact that the Pustertal Railway, which was operated from 1871, did not meet the Brenner Railway in Brixen, but further north in the Franzensfeste station .

In the 1920s, goods handling was expanded . The bombing of World War II destroyed part of the reception building , which was subsequently rebuilt with a northern extension. In 1967 the building was renovated and redesigned internally. An annex building on the south side with toilets and lifts, P + R spaces and a transformer building were built in 2003 .

In 2014, RFI ceded extensive areas at the train station to the State of South Tyrol. These are now to be used to build a mobility center with a bicycle parking garage, taxi parking spaces, bus terminal and other car parking spaces.

Buildings

Apart from a canopy that was added later, the exterior of the reception building is relatively well preserved in its original state. The building designed by Wilhelm von Flattich has a protruding central section with wooden gables on the street and track sides . It is clad with Brixen granite , and the embossed corner cuboids and window arches set design accents . The historic buildings on the station area also include the tower-like water station with side workshop wings and a wooden goods shed. All these buildings have been listed as historical monuments since 2004.
