The Eisenach West Station is a breakpoint on the Thuringian Railway in the city of Eisenach in Thuringia .

history

Stopping point from 1893

On August 1, 1893, at the insistence of the Eisenach worsted yarn spinning mill, at that time the largest industrial company in the city, the Eisenach-West stop was inaugurated in the immediate vicinity of the western main entrance to the company premises . At this convenient location, about 2.2 km west of the main train station, the Eisenach electricity works, as the operator of the Eisenach tram, had the final stop of the Weststadt line built. The streets connecting to the west and north were planned by the city administration from 1900 onwards for the construction of industrial workers' tenements, so the Westbahnhof formed the heart of a newly emerging suburban district north of the worsted spinning mill.

The station is being built

As early as between 1902 and 1905, the construction of the Schwebda – Wartha railway via Creuzburg , Mihla and Treffurt increased the volume of traffic and the operation became more complicated due to the increased number of train pairs.

At the same time it was necessary to raise the track structure by up to 4 m in order to be able to realize the numerous road crossings in the urban area without crossing. The city made 500,000 Reichsmarks available for this first major project in the 20th century. 10,000 m³ of quarry stone masonry, 850 t of profile steel for viaducts and around 340,000 m³ of ballast and track bed were installed on the approximately 4 km long route from the Eisenach gas works to the Köpping / Hörsel bridge . Since then, a 4 m high wall along the racetrack has shaped the Eisenach townscape. The Westbahnhof also had to be raised to the new line level in the course of the construction work, the station received its current shape and additional points for auxiliary tracks were added.

Until 1961

Eisenach-West - platforms (2008)

During the First World War , Eisenach-West was upgraded to a marshalling yard for the Eisenach main station through a reorganization of the train hierarchy (introduction of military express trains) . At the beginning of the 1930s, an industrial track was laid from the Westbahnhof to the newly built Eisenach gasworks. Since August 1939, also at the urging of the potash industry in the Werra potash district , the transport capacity has been increased enormously by optimizing the timetables for passenger and freight trains. A railway post office was operated at Eisenach-West station .

During the fighting at the end of the Second World War , the railway bridge immediately west of the station over Kasseler Strasse was blown up and train traffic was brought to a standstill for a few weeks. In August 1945 traffic was resumed with 20 pairs of passenger trains per day.

The operating conditions were made extremely difficult by the political framework, as Eisenach was now not far from the zone border and traffic had to be coordinated with the Western occupying powers. A special regulation for the Eisenach - Herleshausen - Gerstungen section - analogous to the whiskey-vodka line - could not be found. Another problem was the smuggling of goods and people. Raids also became the order of the day at the Westbahnhof.

Shutdown and restart

After the Berlin Wall was built in August 1961, only a few passenger trains stopped in Eisenach-West. On September 1, 1969, all traffic on the Wartha - Mihla line and on September 25, 1976 on the Wartha - Hörschel - Eisenach railway station was discontinued. At the end of the 1980s, the construction of the new part of the Eisenach automobile plant west of the city (today Opel Eisenach ) made it necessary to set up a shuttle service. In the 1989/90 timetable, three pairs of trains (Gotha–) Wutha –Eisenach Hbf – Eisenach West – Eisenach AWE are shown.

After reunification , the station was completely renovated and is now the stop of the R6 from Eisenach Hbf to Bebra . Since June 2, 1991, the reconstructed and now electrified Eisenach – Wartha – Gerstungen line has been gradually put back into operation, and the buildings have been extensively renovated for this purpose. On December 15, 1992, the Hörseltalbahn GmbH (HTB) started operations at Eisenach- Stedtfeld station and a short time later, on May 23, 1993, the Eisenach-Opelwerk stop was opened.

Investments

The listed railway station consists of two buildings, which are connected to each other by a connecting tunnel under the track structure and thus enable quick access between the two platforms.

The southern structure

The southern building was used as a reception and check-in building. It enables access to the train station and is located on Kasseler Straße. It is a brick building typical of the railways and was optimized for the special functionalities of rail operations in the 1920s. A small waiting room and the counter area were located on the ground floor; a staircase led to the temporarily covered platform in the direction of Erfurt. On the upper floor there were service rooms for the railway staff, signaling technology and other technical apparatus; today this area is a storage room or warehouse.

The northern structure

This auxiliary building housed a branch of the railway post office on the ground floor, which was accessible from the north of the racecourse via a separate service entrance and loading ramp . The platform in the direction of Gerstungen was connected to the waiting room and the counter area via a narrow underground corridor. An outside staircase made it possible to descend to the racetrack. This platform has an approximately 20 m long, covered zone for passengers. The adjacent rooms on the upper floor were used for administration and technical purposes and as a kiosk. After the closure of the Eisenach-West train station, this building became the home of the Eisenach Model Railway Association , which has set up a display system here. The building and the platform roof were badly damaged by fire on February 13, 2017.
