The Obertürkheim station located at kilometer 9.3 of the Fils Valley Railway and a station in the network of the Stuttgart S-Bahn . The station building is a listed building . Today it houses apartments and shops.

history

Obertürkheim was given a stop when the Württemberg Central Railway was being built from Stuttgart to Esslingen . When it went into operation on November 7, 1845, it was the third station of the Royal Württemberg State Railroad .

In order to strengthen the foundation of the one-story reception building, earth had to be removed from the Ailenberg. Later the building was raised by another floor. It also got a wing on the left and right. The upper floor occupied by the station master , on the ground floor was next to the waiting room and from 1855 to 1899, a post and telegraph office, which for the communities Obertürkheim, Uhlbach and Hedelfingen was responsible.

As early as 1852, the State Railroad expanded the section of the Eastern Railway between Cannstatt and Plochingen to double-track. With the onset of industrialization in the wine-growing community, the station was expanded in 1868 to include a goods shed with a loading ramp.

From May 24, 1912, the last stop was the opening line of the tram Esslingen , by the company Urban Eßlinger tram (ESS) was operated on the station forecourt . The tram ran from Obertürkheim to Oberesslingen .

The increasing rail traffic made an enlargement of the station inevitable. The reception building was no longer sufficient. For the new building, the management of the state railway commissioned the architect Martin Mayer, who also designed the Cannstatter station building completed in 1915. Construction began in 1914. This makes it - next to the station buildings in Cannstatt and Mettingen - one of the last structures that the state railway had built.

The lattice windows and green shutters on the platform side are characteristic of the two-story sandstone building. The facade on the forecourt side looks very representative with its two corner projections . The three round windows in between on the upper floor are similar to those at Cannstatter Bahnhof. There are several dormers on the hipped roof . Delayed by the First World War , the building could only be occupied in August 1918. The previous building, which was in the immediate vicinity, was retained until 1929.

On February 15, 1919, the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG extended its suburban network to the Obertürkheim station forecourt, creating the number 26 tram from Oberesslingen to the Stuttgart Palace Square.
On April 1, 1922, Obertürkheim was incorporated into Stuttgart, which resulted in the station being renamed Stuttgart-Obertürkheim on December 1, 1927 .

On October 14, 1931, the Reichsbahn completed the four-track expansion between Cannstatt and Esslingen. After the electrification of the Eastern Railway, Stuttgart suburban traffic to Esslingen began on May 15, 1933 . The number of passengers on tram line 26 fell as a result. From July 10, 1944, the Esslingen am Neckar trolleybus replaced the tram between Obertürkheim and Oberesslingen. Its current line 101 has since connected Obertürkheim station with the Lerchenäckern in Oberesslingen.

In 1994, the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG switched line 4 to normal-gauge light rail operations , which has since ended in Untertürkheim . A continuation to Obertürkheim was not made. An extension of the trolleybus to Untertürkheim was also not popular.

In the course of Stuttgart 21 , the renovation of the Obertürkheim signal box was awarded for 3.7 million euros in 2012 (Siemens SpDrS60). Due to changes in the plan, the estimated costs in September 2016 were 7.1 million euros.

outlook

In the course of the “Stuttgart 21” project, tracks are to be dismantled in Obertürkheim station, two sidings to be built on the northern edge of the facility and the pedestrian underpass to be partially rebuilt.

The S-Bahn station is to be made barrier-free by 2030.

Rail operations

The station is served by the S1 line of the Stuttgart S-Bahn. Track 5 is assigned to the S-Bahn in the direction of Bad Cannstatt, track 6 to those in the direction of Esslingen. Tracks 2 and 4 are used for long-distance and freight traffic . Tracks 1 and 3 were dismantled. The platforms are connected by a underpass to reach, between the station square and the park-and-ride - parking passes.

The Obertürkheim station corresponds, according to the Deutsche Bahn AG of Bahnhof Category 4th
