The Gare de Thionville , the train station of the French town of Thionville in the Moselle department . The station is mainly set up for commuter traffic . All trains stop here, including the TGV between Luxembourg and Paris and the EuroCitys on their way between Brussels and Basel . After Metz station , this is the most important station in north-east Lorraine .

history

The station was opened by the Chemin de fer de l'Est as part of the construction of the Metz – Thionville railway line in 1854. At that time the city had just under 8,000 inhabitants. Thionville was initially the end of the line for five years before the building could continue to Luxembourg after the concession was granted . From 1906 to the mid-1930s, trains also ran from the station forecourt on the Diedenhofen – Mondorf line , which in Mondorf had a connection to the Luxembourg – Remich line .

Reception building

The station building is located on the Moselle side opposite the city center on the island, which is formed by the Fossé des Remparts de Thionville canal , directly at the bridge of the D 953, formerly the N53 . The station has extensive track systems that face a turntable with a locomotive shed towards the southwest . There are additional sidings on the route in the direction of Trier (northeast) . Most of the facilities, including the locomotive shed, are in good structural condition and are still in use.

The building is of the "Donjon" type, the appearance of which has been enhanced by the construction of a protruding structure and the height emphasized by the elongated roof of the tower.

The elongated station building was completed in 1878 - the year in which the initially single-track line to Trier went into operation - and had the same floor plan as the Bénestroff station south of Metz . In 1898, the second track in the direction of Trier was put into operation and an extensive extension of the station building was opened in order to cope with the growing flow of travelers. During the First World War , the station was an important transfer station for troop transports to the west.

The station was extensively renovated in 2011 with EU funds.

service

The station is equipped with a ticket office and a snack bar. The building is open daily between 5 a.m. and 11:45 p.m.

traffic

In Thionville, Regional Express trains between Luxembourg , Thionville, Metz and Nancy usually stop every 20 minutes. There are also individual TGV trains via LGV Est européenne between Luxembourg and Paris Est . One or two trains run between Bouzonville and Thionville Monday through Saturday during rush hour . The Trier-Lorraine-Express, RE16 Trier - Perl - Thionville - Metz , also runs on weekends .

Planning

According to the plans for the 2015 Rhineland-Palatinate cycle , all trains on the Upper Moselle route should be extended from their previous terminus in Perl via the German-French border to Thionville from the 2014/2015 timetable change onwards. However, these plans are now a long way off. In the association assembly of the SPNV Nord it was said that there was no acceptance on the French side for the connection of the trains to Thionville. Instead, the aim is to expand the offer of the excursion train “Trier-Lorraine-Express” (RE 16) from currently two train pairs on the weekend to five to six train pairs. The problem of multi-system capability is to be solved by diesel multiple units.

This idea is modified as "a daily cross-border train services in from December 2024 SPNV between Trier and Metz via Perl with a regular timetable to be created Future. Regional Express (RE) line Trier - Perl - Thionville - Metz The route over the Upper Moselle route is initially offered every 2 hours with a journey time of less than one and three quarters of an hour. " The problem of the different electricity systems in Germany and France is to be solved with multi-system vehicles of the Alstom Coradia Polyvalent type .
