The Metz-Ville – Zoufftgen railway is a French railway that connects France with Luxembourg. It runs almost in a north-south direction, is 55 kilometers long and was put into operation between 1854 and 1859. The line has been electrified since 1956. Both local trains and the TGV run on it . Even before the Second World War there was a sleeping car connection Munich - Strasbourg - Metz - Luxembourg - Calais .

At Thionville station , the Thionville – Trier line branches off in the direction of Germany, which has only recently been used continuously again (only on Sundays and public holidays).

history

The Wilhelm-Luxemburg-Bahn -Gesellschaft (GL) became the concessionaire for the line after the State Treaty between France and Luxembourg , signed on June 10, 1857, issued the operation of an international railway line. The section between Metz and Thionville went into operation on September 16, 1854, the remaining section with border crossing not until five years later.

business

Trains run at least every hour ( tactless ) between the two countries. In France, passenger transport is carried out by TER Lorraine , which operates this route under route number 1, and in Luxembourg by CFL , which calls the route 90 . The pace is tighter within the two countries.
