The Roudnice nad Labem – Zlonice railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic , the two sections of which were originally built by the Prague – Dux Railway and the Raudnitz – Hospozín local railway . It leads in Central Bohemia from Roudnice nad Labem via Straškov and Kmetiněves (formerly Hospozin) to Zlonice .

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

As early as 1873, after the Prague-Dux railway was put into operation, the need to connect the sugar beet factories and breweries in the Zlonice region with the railway soon became apparent . On September 30, 1881, the Prague-Dux Railway received the concession for a local railway from Zlonitz to Hospozin. Part of the concession was the obligation to start construction immediately and to complete it within six months. The line was opened on July 17, 1882. The Prague-Dux Railway will initially run the business itself. From July 1, 1884, the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) took over this task. After the nationalization of the Prague-Dux Railway on January 1, 1892, the line was also owned by the kkStB.

In 1892 the Bohemian state law on support for low-level railways was published . In 1895 the mayor of Roudnice nad Labem , Erwin Špindler, applied for the construction of the local Raudnitz - Hospozin railway . The concession for this private local railway was granted by the Austrian Law No. 229 on December 19, 1898. The line was opened on November 2, 1900. Operation was taken over by kkStB, which from then on operated the entire route between Roudnice and Zlonice as a unit.

The railway line brought about a great boom for the sugar beet factories and the associated farms. While 11,330 tons of sugar beet were transported in 1900, in 1901 it was already 53,010 tons. After the First World War, operations on the line were transferred to the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). The 1918 timetable indicated two pairs of passenger trains covering the entire route, and another operated between Zlonice and Hospozin.

On January 1, 1925, the Raudnitz – Hospozin local railway was nationalized. From then on, the entire route was owned by ČSD.

In the early days of the railway, freight trains to farms dominated. The railway line enabled the rapid passage of food products to the places where they were needed. For this reason, passenger traffic was primarily handled in mixed trains until May 15, 1931, when the M 122.0 motor vehicle performed purely passenger train services. Mixed trains continued to run until May 21, 1977, when the 434.2146 ran the last mixed train.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia .

Straškov Railway Station (2009)

In 1995 additional freight trains ran between Roudnice nad Labem and Roudnice nad Labem Hracholusky and Zlonice - Kmetiněves (formerly Hospozin). In 1995/96, freight traffic was fundamentally revised, and since then it has only operated on the Roudnice nad Labem - Straškov section . In order to avoid train traffic over unsecured road crossings, as little transport as possible is carried out on the Kmetiněves - Straškov route today . Passenger traffic on the Roudnice nad Labem - Straškov route runs approximately every hour with a few gaps, while two pairs of trains run daily on the Straškov - Zlonice route.

For the future, the route will not only have a small railway idyll. During the week it has a feeder traffic to the adjacent main routes, at the weekend it is used in particular for excursion traffic to the Říp . The railway line also has a strategic character in the event of diversion traffic during construction work or accidents.

Vehicle use

Diesel multiple unit series 809 in Roudnice nad Labem station (2008)

The operation was opened with rented vehicles of the series kkStB 97 and kkStB 59 . Although the management of the local railway made several applications to buy the vehicles, it did not materialize. Therefore, and in consideration of the increasing traffic, the local railway company ordered two machines of the KkStB 178 series from the First Bohemian-Moravian Machine Factory in Prague and received the 178.56 (later 422.029) and 178.57 (later 422.030) from them. These machines easily coped with the increasing traffic. The 178.56 only ensured traffic until 1917 and was then confiscated for military purposes. Only in 1926 did she return to her route. The 178.57 fell by the wayside and later ran to Zlonice . In doing so, she had to take over tensioning services in front of a locomotive of the state railroad in beet transport.

From May 15, 1931 passenger traffic was taken over by an M 122.0 series motor vehicle , which was replaced by the M 131.1 motor vehicle in 1948 . Steam locomotives of the series 434 and 475.1 were used for the remaining trains . Steam operation came to an end on May 21, 1977. Since that time, diesel locomotives of the T 435.0 and T 444.0 series have operated on the route . In the eighties they were replaced by locomotives of the T 478.3 , T 466.2 and T 478.1 series .

Today only the modernized railcars of the ČD series 809 are used in tourist traffic . The 742 series locomotives are primarily used for freight train services.
