The Doupov – Vilémov u Kadaně railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built by the Austrian Local Railway Company (ÖLEG) and Kaadner Lokalbahnen as a state-guaranteed local railway . Today only the line from Vilémov u Kadaně ( Willomitz ) via Radonice ( Radonitz ) to Kadaňský Rohozec ( Bohemian Rust ) is still in operation. The further route to Doupov ( Duppau ) was shut down and broken off in the 1970s because of its location in a military training area.

According to a decree of the Czech government, the remaining line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

The route from Willomitz to Duppau had its origin in the Schönhof to Radonitz local railway , for which the ÖLEG had received the concession on February 28, 1882. This local railway was an extension of the Kaschitz – Schönhof line of the Pilsen – Priesen (–Komotau) (EPPK) railway, which had existed since 1881 and was then acquired by the ÖLEG. On January 1, 1884, the Schönhof – Radonitz local railway was opened.

On December 22, 1900, the Kaaden Local Railways received the concession for the Kaaden – Willomitz and Radonitz – Duppau lines. The Kaadner Lokalbahnen built a new station in Willomitz, which was to serve as a branch station between the now continuous connection Kaschitz – Kaaden and the line to Duppau.

The routes were opened on November 10, 1902 (Radonitz – Duppau) and August 1, 1903 (Kaaden – Willomitz). The kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) took over the management of the entire route . Initially, three mixed pairs of trains ran daily. For the Willomitz – Duppau route they needed 41 minutes uphill and 33 minutes downhill.

After the First World War , the line was transferred to the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). Their first timetable from 1919 only recorded two pairs of trains that took over an hour for the entire route.

On January 1, 1925, the Kaadner local railways were nationalized.

In the 1930s, four out of five pairs of passenger trains ran with modern motorized railcars, which led to a significant reduction in travel times. Some of the trains were tied through to Kaaden or Komotau.

After the annexation of the Sudetenland to Germany on October 1, 1938, the line came under the administration of the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Dresden . In the imperial course book the connection was included as course book route 167j Willomitz – Duppau . After the end of the Second World War on May 8, 1945, the line came back to the ČSD.

A turning point in 1945/46 was the almost complete expulsion of the German-speaking population living in the railway area. This led to a significant reduction in transport demand. A resettlement with Czechs was ultimately only partially successful, which resulted in the decision to establish the Hradiště military training area in 1953 . The area was finally cleared by the residents in several stages. The town of Doupov was resettled by May 15, 1954. Public rail traffic was withdrawn as early as April 30, 1954 to Kadaňský Rohozec outside the restricted area. The stretch between Kadaňský Rohozec and Doupov was only used for military purposes. It was canceled in the 1970s.

The 1988 timetable included a total of eight pairs of trains on the route between Vilémov u Kadaně and Kadaňský Rohozec, three of which were tied to and from Kadaň . Other trains ran between Vilémov u Kadaně and Radonice u Kadaně. The trains took 21 to 23 minutes to travel between Vilémov and Kadaňský Rohozec.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

Tourist traffic on the route between Vilémov and Kadaňský Rohozec was maintained until the timetable change on December 9, 2006. The 2006 timetable still included three pairs of trains between Vilémov and Kadaňský Rohozec. The last user in freight traffic was the forest management of the military training area until 2003. At today's end of the route there is a loading ramp for military vehicles.

Today there is only tourist traffic on the route between Vilémov and Radonice on the weekends of the summer half-year, which is marketed under the name “Doupovská dráha” (Duppov Railway). The responsible railway company was initially the company Jindřichohradecké místní dráhy (JHMD) and is now Railway Capital . The trains have been integrated into the Ústecký kraj regional cycle as the T6 tourist line since 2016 .
