Bajazzo is a Berlin jazz rock band that was founded in East Berlin in 1978 . The name was chosen because “Bajazzo” contains the letters “jazz”. " Bajazzo " is also the name of an Italian clown figure.
Band history
The band was founded by Jürgen Heckel (guitar), Gerhard Kubach (electric bass), the drummer Peter Beck and the percussionist Rolando Garcia as a Latin jazz rock formation. In 1980 Beck and Garcia left the band. For them came the keyboardist Frank Nicolovius, the drummer Jörg Knobloch, Peter Lorenz (alto saxophone, flute) and Lothar Hartig (tenor and soprano saxophone). In 1981 the band members received their professional ID. Lorenz left the band in 1982. 1983 some instrumental titles were produced by the radio of the GDR ; A concert recording was produced for GDR television . In the same year, the singer Jacqueline Jacob joined the band. In 1984 drummer Michael Behm (formerly with Stern-Combo Meißen and Neue Generation ) joined the band and replaced Knobloch. 1985 came the singer Pascal von Wroblewsky and replaced Jacqueline Jacob. At the same time, Helmut Forsthoff (saxophone) became a member of the band; he had previously played with Modern Soul Band and SOK and was replaced in 1988 by Falk Breitkreuz .
In 1987 the band recorded their only LP on the Amiga record label , Fasten Seat Belts! . The album was released in 1988. In 1991 von Wroblewsky left the band and from then on Bajazzo only played instrumental titles. In 2000 the band consisted of Heckel, Kubach and Breitkreuz from Volker Grewe (keyboard, vibraphone), Joe Dorff (keyboard), Peter Michailow (drums), Topo Gioia (percussion) and Micha Joch (percussion). From 2001 von Wroblewsky sang again with Bajazzo and from 2006 Julia Hülsmann played keyboard and Alfredo Hechevarria played the electric bass. Many of the musicians also played in other projects at the same time. Nicolovius and Jacob also appeared as a duo.
From 2009 to 2011 the guitarist Jürgen Heckel recorded the album Pascal - Seventies Songbook together with Pascal von Wroblewsky, Peter Michailow and the double bass player Pepe Berns .
Bajazzo has been active again since 2012. Rolf Zielke on keyboard and Max Hughes on bass were new members. Since 2018 the line-up has been: Jürgen Heckel (guitar, synthesizer), Falk Breitkreuz (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, bass clarinet), Rolf Zielke (piano, keyboard), Max Hughes (bass), Topo Gioa (percussion) and Christin Neddens (drums).
