Rolf Zielke

Rolf Zielke (born July 22, 1964 in Hameln ) is a jazz pianist and composer who lives in Berlin.

Live and act

Zielke, who had piano lessons from the age of seven, studied jazz piano (with Otto Wolters ) and classical piano (with Bernd Goetzke ) in Hanover from 1985 to 1989 . He then toured with various bands in Germany, but also internationally. He was musical director at theaters in Hanover and Hamburg and composed theater and film music. He also belonged to Ulli Orth's Octet Quintessences ( Praehistorius Jazz ).

He has lived in Berlin since 1997, where he teaches a. a. Jazz piano, ensemble, harmony at the Jazz Institute Berlin , in the Tonmeister course at the Berlin University of the Arts , at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin and at the University of Potsdam . In addition to his own bands, in 2006 he directed the Lower Saxony Jazz Art Ensemble .

He has worked with Charlie Mariano , Thomas Quasthoff , Hendrik Meurkens , David Friedman , Peter Less , Ed Schuller , Biréli Lagrène , Jiggs Whigham , Benny Bailey , Red Holloway , Scott Hamilton , Stacey Kent , Judy Niemack , Sergej Starostin , Kaigal-Ool, among others Khovalig, Nahawa Doumbia, Urna Chahar-Tugchi, Eda Zari, Bill Ramsey , Angelika Milster , Gitte Haenning and the RIAS Big Band Berlin . He was also involved in Marc Sinan's production Hasretim: Journey to Anatolia ( ECM ) as a guest musician with the Dresden Symphony Orchestra and recorded with Ray Blue . He also belongs to Bajazzo .

Film and theater compositions: "Deszcz" ("Rain" 1990) and "Slub Krawca" ("The Tailor's Wedding" 2000) with the Polish film artist Elżbieta Wąsik. “Hexentanz und Teufelsschwanz”: Composition for the 100th anniversary of the “Bergtheater Thale” for orchestra, choir and ballet.

Prizes and awards

Bands in which Zielke was involved were among the winners of the Jazzpodium Niedersachsen competition thirteen times between 1986 and 2002 . He won the Berlin Senate's studio project three times: with the Rolf Zielke Trio feat. Mustafa Boztüy (2001), with the duo Zielke / Boztüy (2004) and with the trio Hot Impressions (2006). The Hasretim: Journey to Anatolia project ( Dresdner Sinfoniker , see above) was awarded the “Special World Horizon” award from the German UNESCO Commission for its “special intercultural horizon” in autumn 2011.
