Bakuman. ( Japanese バ ク マ ン。 ) is a Japanese shōnen - manga , which was written by Tsugumi Ōba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata . The work is the second cooperation between the two mangaka after Death Note and tells the story of the two ninth graders Moritaka Mashiro and Akito Takagi , whose goal it is to become mangaka together .

action

The artistically talented but professionally disoriented 14-year-old ninth grader Moritaka Mashiro once draws a picture of his crush Miho Azuki in a notebook during school. When he notices after school that he has left this one, he goes back to get it, as it contains many such embarrassing drawings. When he arrives in his class, he finds that the best in his class, Akito Takagi, is holding it in his hand. He asks Moritaka to draw mangas for him, for which he wants to write the plot, since he himself is not particularly talented in drawing. At first Moritaka declines resolutely because his uncle was already a Mangaka and Moritaka is aware of his stressful life and death from overwork, which Moritaka interprets as suicide.

On the way home, occupied with this thought, Moritaka receives a call from Akito who threatens to tell Miho about Moritaka's infatuation if Akito's request does not comply. When Moritaka arrives in front of Miho's house, where Akito is already waiting for him, Miho comes out too. Akito then reveals to her that he and Moritaka want to become mangaka. She is excited because she plans to become a seiyū herself . If the manga they were going to write were adapted as anime, Miho could speak the main female character. Overwhelmed by this development, Moritaka thinks of his uncle, who was once in a similar situation, and accidentally proposes marriage to Miho. Miho is completely surprised, but she accepts. Her only condition is that she and Moritaka do not see each other until their dream has come true.

Characters

  • Moritaka Mashiro ( Japanese 真 城 最高 Mashiro Moritaka )
He is the protagonist of the series, who follows in the footsteps of his late Mangaka uncle. He maintained a pen friendship with an old school friend, whom he never dared to confess his love to, and later died of overwork. Moritaka's parents told him about this death from overwork for a long time, because he thought his uncle had been frustrated that none of his works were more popular after a great success. Moritaka is in love with his classmate Miho Azuki, who is planning a career as a voice actress. Fearful of ending up like his uncle, Moritaka makes her at a thoughtless moment a marriage proposal, which Azuki accepts contrary to expectations, but postpones the marriage until her dreams come true. Moritaka decides to team up with his classmate Akito Takagi to draw a manga that will be published in a weekly magazine and eventually processed as an anime so that Azuki can play the lead role there.
Moritaka is a talented artist, but a perfectionist and always dissatisfied with his drawings. He is often called Saikō ( Japanese サ イ コ ー ).
  • Akito Takagi ( Japanese 高木 秋 人 Takagi Akito )
Akito is one of Moritaka's classmates. He's top of the class and the one who got Moritaka to draw by forcing him into a deal. The two have been working together ever since. Akito is the one who comes up with the often unorthodox and profound stories. However, his drawing skills leave much to be desired, which is why he recruited Moritaka to work with him. He is often called Shūto ( Japanese シ ュ ー ト ) by classmates , which is probably a reference to the English word shoot . Akito addressed Moritaka with his school nickname Saikō , but Moritaka did not use Akito's school nickname because it sounded too cool compared to his. As a replacement, he came up with the name Shūjin ( Japanese シ ュ ー ジ ン ). In the further course of the story, he meets Azuki's best friend Kaya Miyoshi, and after a while they even get married.
  • Eiji Niizuma ( Japanese 新 妻 エ イ ジ Niizuma Eiji )
Eiji Niizuma is both rival and friend of Moritaka and Akito. After winning the Tezuka Manga Prize at the age of 15, he published his own manga series, which is very successful. He is very unworldly and often behaves like a toddler, but since he is a brilliant mangaka, he enjoys the respect of the editors and also the respect of the other mangaka. Despite all this, he is in no way arrogant, but always nice, objective and helpful. Unfortunately, he always has his own mind and does not adapt, so that his editor in particular has to keep his nerve.
  • Miho Azuki ( Japanese 亜 豆 美 保 Azuki Miho )
Miho is Moritaka's fiancée, whose dream is to be successful as a voice actress and to play the lead role in an anime of Moritaka and Akito. Despite her shyness, she seems to have a talent for it, as she regularly receives new offers for speaking roles. Her relationship with Moritaka is largely based on email contact as they actually don't want to meet until both of their dreams come true. This kind of relationship is advantageous for Miho, as she does not speak much and is always very embarrassed in front of Moritaka, but she dreams of being with him one day.
  • Kaya Miyoshi ( Japanese 見 吉 香 耶 Miyoshi Kaya )
Kaya is Miho's best friend, and in the course of the story she meets Akito, and after a while the two even get married. She develops into an important helper for Moritaka and Akito, because on the one hand she often takes on smaller jobs, and she usually brings the atmosphere into the drawing studio, as Moritaka is very reserved. But she is by no means always nice, occasionally she is quick-tempered, and she also practices martial arts, which especially for Akito does not always make living together easy. Nevertheless, she has a good heart and helps wherever she can.
  • Shinta Fukuda ( Japanese 福田 真 太 Fukuda Shinta )
Shinta worked at Eiji as an assistant before he made his breakthrough as a mangaka himself. He now publishes successful manga series himself and, like Eiji, is a friend and rival of Moritaka and Akito. Of all the young mangaka he is the most emotional, and he is extremely convinced of himself. So it's hardly surprising that he thinks he can revolutionize jump. That's why he founded "Team Fukuda" together with Moritaka and Akito, Eiji and other young Mangaka. To a certain extent, he is the spokesman for this group and also likes to mess with his editor or even with the board of the Jump.
  • Kazuya Hiramaru ( Japanese 平 丸 一 也 Hiramaru Kazuya )
Kazuya is a mangaka with a successful series. He decided to draw manga after reading a manga magazine, even though he had nothing to do with manga before that. But his talent makes up for it. However, he is extremely lazy and flees from work when he can. Only through the initiatives of his editor, who can motivate Kazuya again and again, Kazuya gets his series drawn. His spontaneous personality was his undoing, his spontaneous decision to draw manga now robs him of almost all freedom.
