The Balakowski rajon ( Russian Балако́вский райо́н ) is a Rajon in the Russian Oblast of Saratov . The administrative center is the independent city of Balakowo .

Geographical location and waters

The Balakovo Rajon is located in the northern part of the Saratov Oblast , about 150 kilometers northeast of the city of Saratov . The Rajon is located on the eastern bank of the Volga , at the southern end of the Saratov reservoir . The Rajon is cut centrally in an east-west direction by the Great Irgis , which flows into the Volga south of the city of Balakowo.

The Rajon is divided into the city of Balakowo and 17 rural communities (selskoje posselenije) with a total of 47 villages. The largest settlements (as of 2006) are:

  • Bykow Otrog ( Быков Отрог ), 1,272 inhabitants
  • Kormjoschka ( Кормёжка ), 998 inhabitants

Economy and Infrastructure

The main industries in the Rajon are the production of mineral fertilizers, fiber, furniture and energy. There are also raw material deposits of limestone and brick clay, which are used, among other things, for the production of bricks .

The Balakowo Rajon is home to the Saratov hydroelectric power station and the Balakowo nuclear power station, the two most important energy producers in the entire Saratov region.

traffic

Due to the dam of the Saratov reservoir, the Rajon offers one of the few crossing possibilities over the Volga. Both roads and railroad tracks run over the dam. The city of Balakovo on the Volga also has the largest cargo port in the oblast. The airport Balakowo is used for the connection to the domestic Russian air traffic .
