Baldur Hermans

Baldur Hermans (full name: Baldur Hendrik Antons Hermans , born June 13, 1938 in The Hague ; † November 16, 2015 in Essen ) was a German historian and Catholic theologian. He was general secretary of the International Catholic Conference of Scouting (CICS) and international representative of the German Scouting Association Saint Georg (DPSG).

Life

Baldur Hermans was born into a family from the Netherlands. He grew up in Essen-Borbeck. Since 1949 he was a scout in the DPSG. Hermans studied history and was established in 1970 with a thesis on the social question to the Catholics days from 1848 to 1891 at the Faculty of Philosophy of Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn to Dr. phil. PhD. As a student he joined the Catholic student union Stolzenfels Bonn in the Unitas association .

From 1971 Hermans headed the Episcopal Youth Welfare Office in the Diocese of Essen . In 1989, Franz Cardinal Hengsbach appointed him head of the department for social and universal church tasks in the diocese of Essen. He worked there until his retirement in 2004. He was particularly committed to the Don Bosco youth education center of the DPSG Diocesan Association in Hagen-Rummenohl . In 1985 Pope John Paul II appointed him Consultor of the Pontifical Council for the Laity in Rome.

From 1985 to 2004 Hermans was the DPSG's foreign representative and helped establish partnerships with Catholic scout associations in Africa and Bolivia as well as with Arab groups in Israel and Jordan. He was also temporarily the foreign representative of the ring of German scout associations .

In 2002, Hermans was elected General Secretary of the International Catholic Conference of Scouting in Thessaloniki . This umbrella organization represents around 70 Catholic scout associations and pastoral councils in national scout associations in Europe, Africa, America and Asia / Pacific. The CICS, based in Rome, an International Catholic Organization (OIC) recognized by the Vatican, also has a consultative status as a Catholic lay movement within the World Scout Movement. He was re-elected in 2005 and 2008; he worked as general secretary until 2011.

The President of the Central Committee of German Catholics, Hans Joachim Meyer , appointed him to the Board of Trustees of the "Lumen Gentium - Foundation of German Catholics".

Baldur Hermans was a lecturer in Christian social teaching at the Episcopal Seminary in Essen.
