Balivanich ( Scottish Gaelic : Baile a 'Mhanaich ) is a village on the island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland . It is the main center of Benbecula. The name means "city of the monk" and probably refers to a monastery founded here possibly as early as the 6th century, to which the teampull Chaluim Chille could have belonged, a small church dedicated to Columban of Iona , the ruins of which are still south of the village today can still be seen. The chamber tomb Airidh na h-aon Oidche is located in Balivanich.

Geography and climate

Balivanich is located on the north west coast of Benbecula in a largely flat area (0 to 10 meters above sea level ). On the cut-off date of the census on April 29, 2001, the village area covered 3.76 km².

The local weather is characterized by almost constant, moist, cool westerly winds. Nevertheless, the foothills of the Gulf Stream ensure an overall mild climate all year round without any particular temperature fluctuations. Severe frosts are rare; the annual averages range from approx. 5 ° C in January to approx. 14 ° C in August. Spread over the year, around 1,200 mm of precipitation falls, with May being the driest month with an average of 10 rainy days. In December, precipitation falls on an average of 22 days in Balivanich, which is more than in the other months.

Meaningful statistics on religious affiliations in Balivanich have not yet been published by the Scottish authorities, as they might enable the identification of individual residents. The following figures are available for the island of Benbecula, of which Balivanich is the most populous settlement: In the 2001 census, 42.75% of the respondents declared themselves to be members of the Roman Catholic Church , 33.31% of the Protestant Church of Scotland , and 8.25 % said they were members of another Christian denomination . 11.85% did not feel they belonged to any religion .

There is a funeral home in Balivanich ; However, funerals take place in the settlement of Nunton , south of the village . The cemetery of Nunton, Cladh Mhuire , is divided into two parts by the B892, the eastern, old part with some war graves from both world wars and the new part to the west of the road, which is now mostly used. According to an information board placed there, Cladh Mhuire is the only site still in use on Benbecula with an early Christian reference (possibly founded in the time of Columban of Iona in the 6th century).

Transportation

Balivanich is connected via the B892 to the north-south main traffic axis A865 , which connects North Uist , Benbecula and South Uist . The village is served by the W17 bus line , which runs between Berneray in the north and Eriskay in the south. This service is provided by the regional administration for the Western Isles (Comhairle nan Eilean Siar) in cooperation with local bus companies and the postal bus service. In view of the small population, the buses run regularly but not particularly frequently.
