Surname

The name is a corruption of the term “Balneario” (Spanish for “therapeutic bath”) Nº 6. The word Ballermann is a slang term for a firearm and Ballern is the same formulation for drinking large amounts of alcohol.

In 1994 a couple from Lower Saxony registered the name “Ballermann”; the license right continues until 2027.

In February 2017 the name of the "Ballermann 6" was changed to " Beach Club Six ".

There are a total of 15 almost identical beach bars ( Balneario Nº 1 to Balneario Nº 15 - counting from southeast to northwest) over a distance of around four kilometers approximately every 270 meters . In particular, the Balneario Nº 6 ( Ballermann 6 ) got its reputation from mass tourism from Germany. German and European media have often reported on the scene at Ballermann 6 . Mainly German beer and Spanish sangría are drunk there; the latter used to be served in plastic buckets with extra long straws. This became colloquially known as bucket drinking .

For some years now, the Mallorcan government has banned the sale of alcoholic beverages in buckets. The term "Ballermann" is a synonym for a certain party mentality or for binge drinking . This was the subject of the 1997 film comedy Ballermann 6 .

The Ballermann myth , which has been stylized as a cliché or stereotype at the same time , associates a very specific scenario that occurs over and over there in roughly this form: The typical ambience of Ballermann therefore includes sound reinforcement with a form of music that is based on compilations with titles such as Ballermann hits a . Ä. finds again. To a mixture of folk hits , Eurodance and fairground techno , texts are mainly sung in German, which mostly revolve around sex, alcohol consumption and local events - vacation, sun, beach and the Ballermann himself. The tracks are played during the opening times in the beach bar via external loudspeakers, but they can also be heard in other bars. This music is an expression of an attitude towards life that also appears in Germany in the form of public or private “Ballermann parties”. There are also comparable parties at the Cologne Carnival , at the Munich Oktoberfest and at après-ski parties. B. in the Austrian Ischgl .

The stars of this scene are or were a. Jürgen Drews , Mickie Krause , Dieter Thomas Kuhn , Michael Wendler and Tim Toupet . The Cologne carnival groups Paveier and Höhner are popular - also outside of the carnival session .

Excessive party culture and drinking tourism

The term Ballermann denotes forms of excessive party culture as well as the segment of drinking and party tourism, also outside of Mallorca, for example in Bulgaria. Appropriate places are there on Gold beach and sun beach to find. The beaches are becoming more and more popular with the predominantly young audience because of the comparatively cheap drink prices. Desired by the local restaurateurs, the party miles there are considered to be Ballermann in the Balkans . There is also talk of increasing Ballermann tourism in Berlin-Friedrichshain .

Reactions to the image and adverse effects on the local population

After the 2006 World Cup, the government of the Balearic Islands set a long-standing limitation of outside music to 64  dB . The bars on the Platja de Palma have to completely stop the outside music from midnight, which means a considerable loss of the “ballerina mood” for many of the tourists. The noise limitation affects the entire island of Mallorca. Decibel limiters on the music systems and double doors to reduce external noise are mandatory across the island in bars with nightly opening hours.

The balneario bars themselves are closed from around 2:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. As early as 1998, the German-language sign with the inscription "Ballermann 6", which could still be seen in the film of the same name, was removed. In the same year there were demonstrations by restaurateurs against the planned introduction of an earlier curfew.

In 2013 there was an alcohol ban on Ballermann for the first time in order to give a better picture in the high season. Between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., there was an alcohol patrol from the police from Ballermann 6 to Ballermann 4. The alcohol and "drinking ban" was in effect from June 28, 2013 up to and including September 1, 2013.

In 2014, the city council of Palma decided with the "Ordinance for civilized coexistence" a catalog of bans to ensure more order and cleanliness on the "Ballermann".

COVID-19 pandemic

After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic , bars, pubs, restaurants and other nightlife venues across Europe were closed. In Spain, around 30,000 people had died from COVID-19 by mid-2020 . After a far-reaching lockdown in Spain (including the Spanish islands ), tourism has been allowed again since June 2020. In July there were nightly drinking bouts on Ballermann and in the adjacent streets, during which the participants violated distance and hygiene requirements. This attracted attention across Europe - also against the background that après-ski parties in Ischgl at the beginning of 2020 were a hotspot from which returning tourists dragged SARS-CoV-2 to their home countries. Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) called the behavior dangerous and "inconsiderate towards everyone who wants to spend their vacation in safety". Mallorca's regional government closed all bars in the party centers in mid-July (in addition to the “Beer” and “Ham Street” and “Punta Ballena” in the British stronghold of Magaluf for two months).

Trivia
