The Balmenhorn is a 4167 m slm high elevation in the Valais Alps and is located entirely in Italy , in the Aosta Valley ( Gressoney-La-Trinité ) region, immediately west of the border with the Vercelli province ( Piedmont ).
It is part of the Monte Rosa - solid , which lies on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The Balmenhorn itself is located on the ridge that extends south from Ludwigshöhe to the Vincent Pyramid .
On the boulder at the edge of the Lys Glacier stands the larger than life bronze statue of Christ "Christ of the Summit" (French: Le Christ des sommets , wdt . The Christ of the Spétze , Italian: Cristo delle vette ), which was made by the Italian artist Alfredo Bai and was released on April 4th. September 1955.
There is disagreement as to whether the Balmenhorn is actually a peak in its own right , as it only slightly stands out from the surrounding glaciers . For this reason, the UIAA only lists the summit in the list of "Less significant peaks above 4000 m".
A few meters below and to the west of the summit, the Felice Giordano bivouac has been located since 1985 and has 6 beds.
Routes
The summit is the quickest (about 1½ – 2 hours) and easiest to reach from the Gnifettihütte ( 3647 m slm ). From here over the relatively gently rising Garstelet glacier to the high plateau at the foothills of the Vincent pyramid and the connecting ridge between Balmenhorn and Schwarzhorn .
