Bamberg potato , even Bamberg potatoes , is an old potato variety from Franken . Potatoes that are considered to be waxy are small and elongated, finger-shaped, crooked. They have firm, light yellow flesh, a light ocher skin and a nutty aroma with an intense taste of their own. The potato plant is rather small and flowers white. The Bamberg Hörnla has been known since the late 19th century. The variety goes well with potato salad .

Bamberger Hörnla are mainly grown in southern Germany . The potato variety is very popular again in connection with the return to traditional varieties.

The variety threatened to become extinct. It is thanks to the commitment of allotment gardeners and friends of a wide variety of varieties in agriculture from all over Germany that the stocks have consolidated.

In October 2013, the variety was confirmed by the EU as a regional trademark ( protected geographical indication g.G.A.), i.e. In other words, since then only potatoes (table and seed potatoes) that have been grown in Franconia have been allowed across Europe as “Bamberger Hörnla”.

Ambitious gardeners and farmers from all over Germany, who made this protection possible with their work, are now, since they are no longer allowed to grow and maintain these potatoes as such, adversely affected by this regulation - this is reminiscent of the story of Linda .

The cultivation of the variety is complex, with the yield being rather low. In addition, the Hörnla cannot be harvested by machine. Outside of the cultivation areas, the variety is therefore often only available in delicatessen stores , specialist dealers and organic stores .

The Bamberg Hörnla are confused with the French La Ratte because of their great similarity and are replaced by the higher-yielding and therefore cheaper variety. In the International Year of the Potato 2008, the Hörnla was voted “ Potato of the Year 2008” by agricultural and environmental organizations . Since December 2005, the Bamberg Hörnla has been a passenger on the Ark of Taste of the German organization Slow food e. V .

In 2015 a Franconian crime thriller by the writer Harry Luck was published under the title “Bamberger Hörnla” .
