history
According to tradition, the first monastery complex was built here in the 4th century AD on the spot where Mor Barshabo was martyred . With the exception of 1933 to 1936, the monastery was abandoned from 1916 to 1965 and could only be renovated and used again afterwards. At the beginning of the 20th century, Gertrude Bell photographed the village monastery, the Mor Yakup monastery that still exists today . The village was given the Turkish name "Peace Hill" in 1928. The old name can be traced back to various variants (Salih, Salah, Selhe).
