Barbara Wally

Barbara Wally (born October 20, 1947 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian art historian and cultural mediator.

Life

Barbara Wally studied in Paris, Florence and Salzburg. Her father was Leopold Wally, a member of the Salzburg state parliament and member of the Federal Council (1966–1978). From 1974 to 1978 she was a lecturer at the universities of Linz and Salzburg. In 1976 she received her doctorate from the University of Salzburg . From 1978 to 1981 she was curator and deputy director of the Kunsthalle Nürnberg . In 1981 she became managing director of the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg . From 2000 to 2008 she was its director, where she was replaced by Hildegund Amanshauser in March 2009 after 28 years of work .

It shaped the international primacy of this institution through the appointment of recognized artists, the opening up to non-Western art tendencies and artists, a top-class art-theoretical accompanying program and the networking with partner institutions in Shanghai , Irkutsk , Rome , Fayoum / Egypt , Adjman and Chicago .

Barbara Wally has lived mainly in Sanaa , Yemen , since 2008 . There she is running a media academy for women.

Research priorities

Her research interests are women artists in the 20th century, art of the interwar period , feminist art , media art , current art, art and the public, female artist careers, artistic teaching, art and religion, the history of the summer academy, as well as contemporary architecture and the architecture of Yemen .

She gave lectures on these topics at universities and art schools in Austria, Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Czech Republic, Romania, Russia, China, USA, VAR. She edited several catalogs and books and published over 200 essays in books, catalogs and journals. She is a member of juries and committees for contemporary art and architecture and their teaching.
