Barbaros Şansal

Barbaros Sansal (* 10. July 1957 in Ankara ) is an openly gay survivor of Turkish fashion designers and human rights activists based in northern Cyprus . He became known as a victim of disproportionate police violence .

Career

Şansal was born in 1957 in the Turkish capital Ankara as the son of Sungur Tekin Şansal and Guner Eczacıbaşı . He studied business administration at Marmara University and received his master's degree in design and chromatics from the Royal Academy of Arts in London before becoming an employee of the famous fashion designer Yıldırım Mayruk. In addition to his career as a fashion designer, Şansal is also known as an LGBT lawyer and an anti-war activist. The openly gay Barbaros could easily avoid military service by revealing his homosexuality . However, the Turkish military regards homosexuality as a "psychosexual illness" and requires "rectal exam" and visual "evidence" in support of the claim. The gay Sansal stated that his homosexual feelings were the motive for his questioning of military service.

Barbaros Şansal hosted two television programs on Turkish television channels called “Pin” and “Safety Pin”. He also wrote two books called "Printing Ink Lives on Newsprint" and "Fitting Room". He translated the book “101 things I Learned in Fashion School” by Matthew Frederick and Alfredo Cabrera. Şansal also taught the history of design at Marmara University, as well as Mehmet Haberal's Bashkent University .

Political commitment

Barbaros Sansal took in 2013 to the protests around the Taksim Gezi Park part, which is very close to his office in Istanbul district of Beyoglu took place. He has been detained and threatened by the police several times after criticizing the police's use of excessive force on Halk TV .

On January 1, 2017, Şansal published a video on social media from his property in Cyprus , where he criticized the state of the current Turkish civil society:

“While scores of journalists are in prison, while children are sexually harassed, raped, while corruption and bribes are everywhere, while extremists are distributing shit to you in the streets, are you still celebrating the New Year? I am not ... Carry on your celebration in disgrace, misery and dirt. Drown in your shit, Turkey. "

"With dozens of journalists in jail while children are molested , raped , corruption and bribes are everywhere, while extremists shit them out on the streets, are they still celebrating the New Year? I don't ... continue your celebration in shame, misery and filth. Drown in your shit, Turkey. "

On the basis of these words, the Interior Minister of Northern Cyprus had Şansal arrested and deported by plane to Istanbul. Immediately after arriving at the airport, Şansal was attacked and verbally abused by people on the tarmac. After he was taken into custody by the police, he was taken to court and detained the following day for allegedly "inciting hatred or hostility to the public" under Article 216 of the Criminal Code . Şansal testified that the words he used were "a satire against discrimination" and that under no circumstances would he accept the allegations made against him.

Şansal was released from Turkish prison on March 2, 2017, but faces further charges of insulting Turkishness , which could bring him up to three years in prison. After his release from prison, Şansal wrote a book about his treatment in the Turkish prison and the attempted lynching of him.
