List of grape varieties

Barbera Bianca is a grape variety that is cultivated in the Italian region of Piedmont . There it was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1825 by Giuseppe Acerbi . The main growing area is near the cities of Ovada and Acqui Terme , mainly in the municipalities of Cremolino , Morsasco and Strevi . Its cultivation is recommended in the provinces of Alessandria , Asti and Cuneo . At the beginning of the 1990s, the area under vines was 366 hectares .

The name of the Barbera was given to the variety because of the similar shape of the grapes and berries. A DNA analysis showed that there is no direct relationship between the two varieties. Nor is it a color mutation .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy and of a light green color. The young leaves are also hairy like cobwebs and the leaf margin is slightly pink - to copper-colored.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is open in a U-shape. The leaf margin is bluntly serrated. The teeth are only medium-sized.
  • The cone-shaped grape is medium-sized and quite dense. The elongated berries are medium-sized and golden yellow in color.

The moderately vigorous grape variety sprouts late and matures about 30 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late. It has good resistance to downy mildew but is susceptible to powdery mildew and raw rot . Barbera Bianca is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
