Coat of arms of those of Barby

Barby is the name of an old noble family from the Magdeburg region . It is not related to the sex of the Earls of Barby . The family name can be traced back to the former Barby Castle on the Elbe and the names of the noble lords and later Counts of Barby who ruled there.

The spelling of the name was initially very inconsistent, e.g. B. de Barbi, de Barbey, van Barby, von Barbye, de Barby, de Barboy, de Barbii , before the current spelling of the name of the city of Barby as well as the gender became naturalized.

history

In 1296 a Joannes de Barbi is mentioned for the first time on the occasion of a donation from Duke Heinrich von Braunschweig to the Jerichow Monastery . Hans von Barby , who is said to have lived around 1223, is considered to be the progenitor of the family . It is proven in 1304 (in the 3rd generation of the family tree ) in a document of the Margrave of Brandenburg Knight Wipard van Barby , which also appears in other documents at the beginning of the 14th century.

The ancestors were initially hereditary lords of Jerichow with Klitzing and Ferchland , from 1423 office holders of Loburg and since 1457 owners of Loburg as well as Isterbies and Kalitz .

The Loburg I estate (Jerichower Land district) was owned by the family until 1945; in 1841 (also until 1945) the Großgestewitz estate ( Burgenlandkreis ) was added. In addition to these two lines, other branches of the family developed in Dessau and Wiesbaden.
