William of Barby

Wilhelm Karl August Philipp Bernhard von Barby (born October 8, 1795 in Loburg ; † July 3, 1883 there ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

He was the son of Friedrich August Karl von Barby (1768-1835) and his wife Karoline, née von Wulffen (1774-1848) from the Grabow family. His father was a Prussian Rittmeister and lord of Loburg. The later Prussian major general Friedrich von Barby (1801–1871) was his brother.

Military career

Barby attended the University of Halle and joined the Regiment of the Gardes du Corps of the Prussian Army on January 16, 1812 as a Junker . There he was promoted to second lieutenant on February 16, 1813 and seriously wounded at the beginning of the war of liberation against Napoleon in the Battle of Großgörschen .

After the Second Peace of Paris he was promoted to major until the end of March 1834 and from April 20, 1838 he was employed as a regular staff officer in his regiment. At the same time as his promotion to lieutenant colonel , Barby was commissioned on April 7, 1842 to lead the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment (called Queen) in Pasewalk . On January 10, 1843 he was appointed regimental commander and in this position he was promoted to colonel on March 22, 1845 . Barby acted as commander of the 6th Cavalry Brigade in Torgau from May 13, 1848 and rose to major general on April 19, 1851 . Under awarding of the character as a lieutenant general was granted him on 5 July 1854 board his farewell .

On the occasion of Wilhelm I's coronation as King of Prussia, he received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class, with oak leaves on October 18, 1861 . Barby was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .

family

He had married Pauline Clementine Ulrike von Wulffen (1800-1880) on May 2, 1819 in Potsdam. The following children were born from the marriage:
