Rudolf Wilhelm Leopold von Barby (born September 13, 1821 in Potsdam , † March 4, 1906 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

He was the son of the later Prussian Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Barby (1795-1883) and his wife Pauline Clementine Ulrike, née von Wulffen (1800-1880). The later Prussian general of the cavalry Adalbert von Barby (1820-1905) was his brother.

Military career

From 1833, Barby first visited the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . On August 9, 1840 he was transferred to the Prussian Army as a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Guards Regiment on foot . There he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on June 22, 1852, and as such he was commanded on March 16, 1854 to command the company at the Potsdam NCO School . Promoted to captain in mid-October 1854 , Barby was a company commander in the mobile 2nd battalion of the 1st Guard Landwehr Regiment in 1859 on the occasion of the Sardinian War . On July 1, 1860 he was transferred to Stettin as a company commander in the newly formed 3rd Guards Regiment on foot and promoted to major on December 16, 1862 . During the war against Denmark he led his 7th company in the battles at Satrup , Nübel , Fredericia and in the assault on the Düppeler Schanzen .

On November 21, 1864 Barby was appointed commander of the 2nd Battalion and took part in this function in 1866 during the war against Austria in the fighting at Thrush and at the Battle of Königgrätz . He became a lieutenant colonel on September 20, 1866 , and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords in recognition of his achievements . As a colonel , Barby was commissioned on August 10, 1868 to lead the 1st Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 13 . On February 25, 1869, he was appointed regimental commander. Barby gave up this association on November 6, 1869 and took over the 6th Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 55 . He led this regiment after mobilization on the occasion of the war against France in 1870/71 in the battles near Spichern and Colombey and during the siege of Metz . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , Barby returned to the garrison in Detmold after the peace treaty .

On March 21, 1873, Barby was released from his command as regimental commander and promoted to major general of the army with the rank and fees of brigade commander. From April 12, 1873 to May 17, 1876 he acted as commander of the 27th Infantry Brigade in Cologne . This was followed by a job as commander of the Rastatt fortress . In this position Barby became lieutenant general on June 11, 1879 and on January 23, 1881 he received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. With the award of the Order of the Crown, First Class, he was put up for disposal on May 10, 1883 with the statutory pension . As a farewell, Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of the Zähringer Lion .

On May 11, 1896, he received permission to wear the uniform of the infantry regiment "Graf Bülow von Dennewitz" (6th Westphalian) No. 55.

family

Barby had married Marie Auguste Adele von Pannwitz (1820-1912) on October 3, 1849 in Wormlage . Several children were born from the marriage. The son Arthur (* 1855) also embarked on a military career in the Prussian Army, was posted as Major zD in April 1905 and was Lieutenant Colonel Commander of the Landsturm Battalion I.
