Barium selenite is an inorganic chemical compound of barium from the selenite group .

Extraction and presentation

Barium selenite can be obtained by reacting sodium selenite with barium chloride solutions .

The synthesis is also possible by reacting a barium chloride solution with selenous acid and adding sodium carbonate to start the precipitation.

properties

Barium selenite is a white solid in its pure state. Technical products are colored cream or pink due to traces of elemental selenium. It is practically insoluble in water and stable in the pH range between 4.6 and 13.7. In air it is stable up to 700 ° C and then oxidizes to barium selenate .

use

Barium selenite is used to color or decolorize glass or to manufacture high-index glasses .
