Barrie Gwyn Rees (born February 4, 1944 in Rhyl , † March 27, 1965 in Nuneaton ) was a Welsh football player .

Career

Rees represented the Welsh national school team in 1959 as a pupil at Glyndwyr Secondary School. In the summer of 1959, on a recommendation from Johnny Carey , the coach of Everton FC , he was brought to the English first division , and Pat Dunne and George were among the other newcomers of that year Sharples , George Morton , Alan Bermingham, and Roy Parnell . In September 1961 he rose to professional at Everton, but he had to wait until October 1963 for his competitive debut in the first team, when he ran up instead of Alex Young on the center-forward position. His goal in the league game against West Ham United was not enough for a point win (final score 2: 4). In his second appearance, a 3-0 home win over Birmingham City , Rees was successful as a goalscorer.

His fourth and last appearance for Everton had Rees during an injury mishap as a right defender in November 1964. In the 1-0 loss to Leeds United at home Goodison Park , his neighbor Sandy Brown was sent off after five minutes and the game was behind a tough game, repeated objects thrown from the spectator rows towards the field and riots in the stands just before the demolition. Meanwhile, Rees also moved into the field of vision of the Welsh Federation . In early November he was part of the Welsh U23 team as a reserve player for a game in Wrexham against England, a month later he traveled again as a reserve player with the Welsh U23 national team for an international match against Scotland in Kilmarnock .

In early January 1965 he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Fourth Division for a transfer of just under £ 10,000 . There Rees, who had already been announced as a "utility player", further demonstrated his versatility, coach Archie Macaulay put him in the right runner position . Rees was used in all twelve games after his engagement, the runner row was formed by the tall and elegant player almost without exception with center runner Norman Gall (22 years old) and Dave Turner (21 years old), the trio was already considered a great hope for the future after a short time. Rees last ran on March 26, 1965 in a 3-1 home win over FC Southport .

On the morning of March 27, 1965, Rees had a fatal accident in a traffic accident when he was overtaking his Mini Cooper and collided with a truck on the A5 road near Nuneaton on the way home to Rhyl .
