In the vicinity of the village there are remains of settlements from the younger Stone Age . There was also gold jewelry from the 6th-7th centuries. Century found. The village was founded in 1335 (first mentioned in 1317 as "ville Bertingen") on an old Prussian settlement Bertyngen vom Prussen with the name Mekede. Earlier names of the village were Groß BANY, Bertingshusen and Deutsch BANY. The meaning of the place name is uncertain. He can get away from mnd. Derived from “bert (l) ing” (monastery brother) or from Prussian “berti” (sprinkle, pour). At the beginning of the 16th century, Nicolaus Copernicus also worked here . The village was completely destroyed in the war between Poland and the Teutonic Order (1519–1521). From 1521 new settlers have settled in BANY. A school and an inn existed here as early as the 16th century. In 1681 part of the village was burned, including the church. In 1724 the parish church was rebuilt as a brick building under the pastor Maciej Mólier (1716–1740). The church tower was not completed until 1800. In 1934 the church was expanded by two aisles under the priest Otto Langkau (1871-1945), who was shot by Soviet soldiers.

Due to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty , the population in the Allenstein voting area , to which Groß BANY belonged, voted on July 11, 1920 on whether it would continue to belong to East Prussia (and thus to Germany) or join Poland. 360 residents voted to remain with East Prussia in Groß Baton, 40 votes for Poland.

Only a few public institutions are currently in operation; a kindergarten, a grocery store and a doctor's office. The school was relocated to Reussen or, for older age groups, to Stabigotten (Stawiguda). The post office is in Jomendorf. The stop at BANY is on the Soldau (Działdowo) - Olsztyn (Olsztyn) route .
