Bart Jan-Baptist Marie Brentjens (born October 10, 1968 in Haelen ) is a Dutch professional cyclist who is mainly active in mountain biking , but also in cross-country cycling .

Athletic career

At the Mountain Bike World Championships in Vail in 1994 , Brentjens won the bronze medal and a year later became world champion in cross country. He then turned pro in 1996 and won the gold medal in the mountain bike competition at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta . Eight years later in Athens he won the bronze medal again. In 2005 he won the second marathon world cup race in Garda Trentino and at the second mountain bike marathon world championships in 2005 he won the silver medal behind Thomas Frischknecht . Also in 2005 he won the Cape Epic stage race together with Roel Paulissen from Belgium.

In 2006 he won the first Cross Country World Cup race in Curaçao . In 2010 he won a stage in the Cape Epic race together with Jelmer Pietersma . Brentjens won the stage race Cape Epic in the Masters category in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Brentjens is currently under contract with the Dolphin - Trek team. His previous team was the Giant Asia Racing Team.

Honors

Brentjens was honored with the induction into the Hall of Fame of the European cycling association Union Européenne de Cyclisme .
