Bartholomäus von Hamm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bartholomäus von Hamm (* before 1300; † 1353 ) was a Cologne cathedral builder .

Bartholomäus von Hamm has been the master builder of the Cologne cathedral since 1333. Nothing is known about his earlier activities, but it can be assumed that he was involved in the Pauluskirche in Hamm , Westphalia , which began in 1275 and was essentially completed by the parish elevation in 1337 , a Gothic hall church which, in its individual forms, proves to be the school building of the Cologne cathedral building .

During the tenure of Bartholomäus von Hamm, the two aisles on the south side of the nave were built on the Cologne cathedral building, of which six double bays, albeit without their vault, were completed as a kind of hall church with an emergency roof. During this time it is reported that the cathedral was being built “constantly and with great effort and expense”, but there was a significant slowdown in construction, so that Archbishop Walram in 1337 “complained about the all too few donations for the cathedral building” defendant. Towards the end of his term of office, preparations began for the start of construction on the two-tower west facade, whose preliminary project with a five-part portal group, which has been handed down in a Viennese floor plan, was probably created under him.

Peter Parler was married to a daughter of Bartholomäus von Hamm, Druda, who had already been commissioned to build the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague when his father-in-law died in 1353 . Instead of him, Michael of Savoy, who was related to him by marriage, was appointed as his successor as Cologne cathedral master builder. It is not known whether there is a genealogical relationship with Hans Hammer , who was a master builder in Strasbourg a century and a half later .
