Friedrich Adolf Ahlert

Friedrich Adolf Ahlert (* 1788 in Rathenow ; † May 10, 1833 in Cologne ) was a German architect and royal Prussian road construction inspector.

Life

Ahlert received his training in Berlin as a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel . From 1819 he was a district building inspector in Cologne, from 1821 he also worked at Cologne Cathedral . From 1823 until his death, he was in charge of the restoration work on the cathedral as master builder and brought the cathedral builder back to life. He had been in charge of construction since 1824, but he was subordinate to the technical government building officer Frank zu Koblenz. Under Ahlert's direction, the cathedral choir, which was in need of repair, was restored and the buttress was changed according to Schinkel's suggestion, but it was precisely this latter measure that met with criticism. For example, “the reconstruction of those four strut systems which were completed before Ahlert's death, although the pattern was given, was not successful, neither in terms of the proportions nor in the development of the forms.” His work on the cathedral was also harshly criticized from other sources:

“The first master builder of the cathedral, building inspector Ahlert, did not bring any youthful impressions with him from his birthplace in Rathenow in der Mark, which could be conducive to the construction of the cathedral. He was a stubborn building mandarin who had absolutely no profession for his job and who relentlessly spoiled what was available. Without singing and sound, and after thoroughly ruining the wonderful choir, Ahlert disappeared from the scene. "
