Bartolo Longo

Bartolo Longo (born February 10, 1841 in Latiano near Brindisi, † October 5, 1926 in Pompei ) was Terziar in the order of the Dominicans  and founder of the pilgrimage site of the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary in Pompei. Pope John Paul II beatified Bartolo Longo in 1980 .

Life

Bartolo Longo grew up in a Catholic family. Through studies in Naples he came together with positivist currents ( Ernest Renan , Bertrando Spaventa ) and eventually became a priest of so-called Spiritism , a group that dealt with the conjuring of spirits. After a serious crisis and health problems, Longo found his way back to the faith of the Roman Catholic Church; he became on October 7, 1871 a member of the third order of the Dominicans . Due to the proximity of the order to the rosary , Longo rediscovered it and chose the order name Rosario .

In 1873 Fratel Rosario began to rebuild a church in Pompei, a place near ancient Pompeii , and in 1875 he received a devotional image of Our Lady of the Rosary from Naples , which he brought to the restored church. In 1891 the enlarged church was consecrated anew . In 1939 the church was expanded again and made a basilica minor .

In 1885 Longo married Countess Mariana di Fusco. The two took care of orphans and children of prisoners. In 1906 they gave the sanctuary to the Holy See . Longo was a Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . He died in 1926 at the age of 85. Pope John Paul II beatified him on October 26, 1980. As the “Apostle of the Rosary”, John Paul mentioned Fratel Rosario several times in his Rosary Cyclical Rosarium Virginis Mariae . The Blessed Day is on October 5th .
