Basankwitz is located in the northeastern urban area of ​​Bautzen, about five kilometers from the city center. Surrounding villages are the districts of Niedergurig in the north and Doberschütz in the northeast, which belong to the municipality of Malschwitz , the Kubschütz districts of Kreckwitz in the east, Canitz-Christina in the southeast and Jenkwitz in the south, Niederkaina in the southwest and Burk in the west.

Basankwitz was first mentioned in a document in 1365 as "Bosenkewicz". In the following time the name changed from "Bosankwicz" in 1378 to "Bosankewitz" in 1419 to "Basinkewicz" in 1534 and finally to the current place name form. From 1589 at the latest, Basankwitz was under the manorial rule of the Niederkaina manor .

Until April 1, 1936 Basankwitz was an independent rural community, then the place was incorporated into Niederkaina . As part of the community of Niederkaina, Basankwitz was assigned to the then newly formed Bautzen district in the Dresden district on July 25, 1952 . After the turning point in the GDR , Basankwitz came to the city of Bautzen on January 1, 1994 as part of the incorporation of Niederkainas . On August 1, 1994, the place was assigned to the old Bautzen district , since the district reform in Saxony on August 1, 2008 , the village has belonged to the Bautzen district .

Population and language
