European Basketball Championship 2005 / Division A
A new qualification system was introduced as part of the qualification for the 2005 European Basketball Championship . The teams were divided into a division A and a division B. The stronger teams that played for the qualification for the European Championship were divided into Division A. The weaker team in Division B played two teams who were promoted to Division A and thus in Division A for places at the 2007 European Basketball Championship .
This year eleven places were played in Division A at the European Championship finals.
Qualifying Round
In the qualifying round 19 teams were drawn in four groups of four teams and one group of three teams. The first two of the five groups qualify for the European Championship finals.

Additional Qualifying Round Games
In the additional qualifying round, the nine teams that have not yet qualified play in three groups of three teams. The first placed of the three groups qualify for the final round of the additional qualifying round. The third-placed play the two relegated teams in Division B.

Final round of the additional qualifying round (Additional Qualifying Tournament)
In the final round of the additional qualifying round, the top three of the additional qualifying round play for qualification for the European Championship finals. Only the winner of this round qualified as the last team.

Relegation Tournament
In the relegation round, the three third-placed players in the additional qualifying round will play to remain in Division A. Only the winner of this round will also play in the qualification for the 2007 European Basketball Championship in the top division.
