history
The name "Battle Creek" had its origin in a battle between a group of land surveyors around Colonel John Mullett and two Indians . According to various sources, Mullett and his group were conducting surveys near what is now the city in the winter of 1823/1824 when the work of the surveyors was disrupted by Native Americans. Two members of the group who remained in the camp were attacked by two Indians who allegedly tried to steal the group's provisions. One of the Indians was seriously injured during the fight, and the surveyors left the area and did not return until June 1824, after Governor Cass had resolved the problem with the Indians. Because of this incident, the nearby river was named the Battle Creek River .
The first settlements in Battle Creek Township were built around 1831, with most of the settlers settling near the fertile and easy-to-cultivate Goguac prairie . A post office was opened in Battle Creek in 1832. A school followed in 1833 and a sawmill in 1837. A brickworks was founded by Simon Carr in 1840 and operated until 1903. The parish was founded in 1839.
