Tree of Wishes (original title: Древо желания , Drewo schelanija , Georgian: ნატვრის ხე ) is a Soviet fictional film that was shot in Georgia under the direction of Tengis Abuladze in 1977 based on stories by the Georgian writer Giorgi Leonidze .

action

Marita's mother has died and the beautiful girl comes back with her father to her grandmother's village so that she can look after the half-orphan. The neighbor boy Gedija falls in love with her, one day blindfolds her to lead her up the most beautiful mountain in the area. Here he gives her a pair of shoes as a token of his affection. They have a good time together, but then she is forcibly married to Schete, whom she does not love and who is rude to her. One day, Schete is with his flock of sheep, Marita gets a visit from Gedija, who still loves her, and they are both happy to see each other again, they hug and kiss violently. Schete's mother sees that and she tells her son after he returns home. But she certainly doesn't tell him that Marita will send Gedija away again immediately. As a punishment, her husband and many backward villagers put her back on a donkey and lead her through the village. Anyone can now throw dirt and spit on them because of the shame. The people who want to help Marita are beaten and driven away. Gedija also wants to help her and is therefore shot. Marita falls from the donkey and is also dead.

The film is loosened up by many episodes with sometimes bizarre characters. So the vagabond Fufala has seen better days. The revolutionary Ioram is supposed to build bombs at night, loves Nargisa and only has children as listeners during his agitations . The easy-going Nargisa turns the heads of all men in the village. Elios is always on the lookout for the magic stone, for the goldfish in the pond or for the magic tree on which he freezes to death when he thinks he has found him and he does not want to leave him in winter either. Bumbula believes that he has discovered the holy stone and is bringing it back to its ancestral site at the church. The mother of an already great son is looking for someone who is educated and who gives her son a cuff so that he can get well again and grow even further. The priest of the village declares himself ready and has to flee after the bell, because the son is well and wants to fight back.

production

The film, shot in color, premiered on August 23, 1977 under the title Древо желания in the Soviet capital Moscow .

In the GDR, Tree of Wishes was primarily shown in studio cinemas. In contrast to the usual practice, this film was not dubbed, but shown in the Georgian version with a German voice-over . The film was shown for the first time on August 11, 1978 in the Berlin cinema Studio Camera at Oranienburger Strasse 54. The first broadcast on television in the GDR took place in the 2nd program on April 8, 1979, and the film was shown on ARD on May 21, 1979.

criticism

Die Neue Zeit writes about the film that the director draws a panorama of human destinies with compelling urgency, which is at home in an unmistakable landscape and society. His narrative style is shaped by the mentality and tradition of the Georgians, loosened up by the wit and wisdom of the people, spiced with tragicomic episodes and bizarre types, interwoven with legend and saga. His plea for human dignity, the right to happiness and justice runs through the film. The poetry of this cinematic work of art is happily preserved in the German version, the original sound has been retained, descriptive and dialogue texts are discreetly spoken.

The lexicon of international films described the film as a poetic fairy tale full of pictorial symbols about the past. While affirming the need for revolution, it is pointed out that progress means loss.
