Railcars with rack and pinion drive system Riggenbach of the Deutsche Bundesbahn were designated as DB class VT 97 . From 1968 they were run as the DB class 797 . In terms of their basic concept, the external dimensions and the interior design, the eight copies of the VT 97 were extremely similar to the widespread VT 98 series , the difference being essentially the absence or presence of the gear drive.

history

In 1962 six motor cars were designed as rack- and- pinion cars and classified as the VT 97.9 series; the associated control car as VS 97 001 to 97 006. The gear drive was supplied by SLM Winterthur . Due to the division of the racks, these rail buses had a wheelbase of only 5.950 m. The maximum speed on the ascent was 15 km / h on the rack, otherwise 90 km / h. The VT 97 901 to 906 operated from May 27, 1962 on the Honau – Lichtenstein rack railway .

The VT 97 901 was transferred to the Passau depot at the beginning of 1964 and ran from 1964 to 1965 in goods traffic on the Erlau – Wegscheid railway line due to a lack of suitable cogwheel locomotives . Two more railcars were ordered for the route to Wegscheid, but on January 28, 1965, a rock fall made the route impassable. The rail bus was now stationed at the Tübingen depot and received the EDP vehicle number 797 901-6 on January 1, 1968.

On the same date, VT 97 902–908 were also renamed 797 902–908. The VT 97 907 and 908 that had already been ordered came straight to the Tübingen depot after delivery in 1965.

After the cogwheel lines were abandoned, the cogwheel drive was expanded between 1970 and 1973. The vehicles were designated as 797 501 to 797 508 from January 1, 1973. It was then used, among other things, on the Göppingen - Boll branch line ( Voralbbahn ) until this line was also closed on May 27, 1989. Three railcars (797 502, 797 503 and 797 505) and two control cars (VS 97 604 and VS 97 605) are owned by the Friends of the Honau-Lichtenstein cog railway. V.
