The D II of the Royal Bavarian State Railroad was a Vizinalbahn - tank locomotive with two coupled axles . Since these vehicles were withdrawn from service very early, namely in the years 1891–1894, their generic name was reused for the C-coupled shunting locomotive introduced in 1898 .
The D II were the smallest standard-gauge locomotives that the Bavarian State Railroad has ever owned. They corresponded to a type of factory from Krauss , which was supplied in numerous variants for various purposes to railways and construction companies. Instead of a steam dome, the boiler only had a regulator attachment behind the chimney, from which the steam inlet pipes on the outside of the boiler led to the cylinders. The steam supply was regulated by an external universal control . The locomotive ran on cast disc wheels and had a water box frame, i. H. the space between the two frame cheeks was designed as a water tank. The driver's cab was initially only protected by a free-standing roof; only later did the locomotives get a complete driver's cab with a sloping roof.
The D II was used on the vicinal railway lines Siegelsdorf – Langenzenn, Immenstadt – Sonthofen and Georgensgmünd – Spalt, which were opened in the early 1870s. Since their low performance was soon no longer sufficient for simple branch line operations, they were retired after only two decades of operation.
