Upper Palatinate Jura

With Oberpfälzer Jura in which is Oberpfalz preferred part of the Fränkischen Jura designated (also called Oberpfälzer Alb).
It extends mainly over the western part of the district of Amberg-Sulzbach , the district of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate , the northwestern district of Regensburg , as well as parts of the districts of Kelheim, Schwandorf and the district of Nürnberger Land. To the west, the Upper Palatinate Jura is roughly bounded by the boundary of the Upper Palatinate administrative district, and in the other directions by the natural boundaries of the Franconian Jura.
The landscape is characterized by plateaus with poor grasslands, meadows, fields and forests, which are interrupted by meadow valleys with small watercourses or forest-covered island mountains. The highest elevation in the Upper Palatinate and the second highest in the entire Franconian Jura is the 652 m high Poppberg in the municipality of Birgland . In the karst of the Upper Palatinate Jura there are numerous caves and grottos as well as sinkholes , funnels in the ground that result from cave collapses.
Larger bodies of water in the rather arid area are the Lauterach , Vils , the Weisse and Schwarze Laber and tributaries of the Pegnitz .
The geographer Robert Gradmann has pointed out that the name Franconian or Upper Palatinate Jura "was spread by cartographers and schoolmen who want to be more geological than the geologists", but based on the historical-popular term of the Swiss-French border mountains Jura, and also for objective reasons, "as a mountain name is just as out of place here as in Swabia" (as Swabian Jura).
Jura tourism region
The Jurasteig , an almost 240 km long circular hiking trail in the Bavarian Jura, has been recognized several times by the German Hiking Association as one of the best hiking routes in Germany since 2008. Holiday resorts in the Jura region with many overnight stays, such as Berching and Dietfurt in the Neumarkt district, belong to the Altmühltal Nature Park . Since 2000, the districts of Amberg-Sulzbach, Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, Regensburg (western part) and Kelheim have been advertising as a working group in the Tourismusverband Ostbayern eV with the controversial name of the Bavarian Jura.
