Belén de Challamayo (also: Challamayo or Challamayu ) is a town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Belén de Challamayo is a central place in the canton of Belén de Challamayo in the municipality of Santiago de Huari in the province of Sebastián Pagador . The village lies at an altitude of 4098  m at the mouth of a tributary in the Río Kollpa Jahuira .

Belén de Challamayo is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano , south of the Cordillera Azanaques on the northeastern edge of the Cordillera de los Frailes , which are both central part of the Cordillera Central mountain range . The climate of the region is a typical time of day climate , in which the daily temperature fluctuations are more pronounced than the mean seasonal fluctuations.

The average annual temperature of the region is 4 ° C (see climate diagram Cruce Culta) and fluctuates between 0 ° C in June and July and 6 ° C from November to January. The annual precipitation is only 350 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 15 mm, and significant precipitation only from December to March with 60 to 80 mm monthly precipitation.

Belén de Challamayo is located at a distance of 190 kilometers by road southeast of Oruro , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Oruro the paved road Ruta 1 leads 116 kilometers south to Challapata , where the Ruta 30 branches off to Uyuni to the south . From Challapata, Ruta 1 then leads 62 kilometers via Ancacato to Thola Palca and on via Cruce Culta and Potosí to Tarija near the Argentine border.

In Thola Palca a country road branches off in a south-westerly direction from Ruta 1 and after one kilometer crosses the Pampa Rancho. A few hundred meters south of the river crossing, a track branches off in a south-easterly direction and after eleven kilometers reaches the village of Belén de Challamayo and then continues in an easterly direction to Lagunillas .

Due to the population distribution that has evolved over time, the region has a significant proportion of the Aymara population; in the municipality of Santiago de Huari, 45.1 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
