The Belianska jaskyňa (German Belaer stalactite cave ) is a show cave in northern Slovakia . The cave is 1752 m long and was opened to the public at the end of the 19th century. The Belianska jaskyňa is a national natural monument of the Slovak Republic.

location

The Belianska jaskyňa is located on the northern slope of the Kobylí vrch mountain in the eastern part of the Belian Limestone Alps ( Belianske Tatras ). Administratively it is located in the municipality of Vysoké Tatry (district Tatranská Kotlina ), in Okres Poprad , in Prešovský kraj in Slovakia not far from the border with Poland . Due to its central location and proximity to the High Tatras , it is a popular day trip destination from both the Slovak and the Polish side. The entrance to the cave is at 890  m nm ; It is reached by a 15-minute walk from the numerous parking lots.

Origin and Discovery

Unlike many other caves in Slovakia, such as For example, the Domica Cave, the Belianska jaskyňa was not formed by underground rivers, but by snow and ice water and heavy rainfall. The water seeped through the lime-rich environment through cracks in the earth and along tectonic faults , hollowing them out further and further and thus forming a 1752 m long cave system with a gradient of 160 m. The front part of the cave was already known to gold diggers in the first half of the 18th century; real exploration did not begin until the second half of the 19th century. In 1881 J. Husz and J. Britz entered the cave for the first time and opened it up in the following years. The cave has been electrically lit since 1896 and is open to the public to a certain extent. Currently 1135 m of the cave system have been developed.

Sights and special features

Interesting to visit are small underground lakes, pagoda-like stalagmites and sinter waterfalls. The abundance of domes and halls is also worth mentioning. The concerts held in the Hudobná sieň (“Music Hall”) are unique in Slovakia.

location

The parking spaces for the cave are clearly located on the main road No. 66 between Ždiar and Spišská Belá . The cave is open all year round except for the period between November 16 and November 30. The sightseeing tour is 1275 m long and takes about 70 minutes.
