Painted churches in the Troodos area is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site in the Republic of Cyprus . The world heritage site includes eleven so-called barn roof churches in the Troodos Mountains .
background
The Church of Cyprus has been autocephalous since the Council of Ephesus (431 AD) . Since the island remained part of the Byzantine Empire , Byzantine art was also widespread here. Numerous church buildings in Cyprus are richly painted with frescoes in the Byzantine style.
As specifically Cypriot style in developed Troodos Mountains , the barn roof churches . It got its name after its mostly deep shingle roofs , which protect it from the frequent rainfall in this region. The simple exterior made of rough, unplastered stones, the low roof and the lack of a bell tower make the buildings look like barns from the outside. The brightly colored frescoes on the inside create a strong contrast to this simple external appearance.
registration
Ten of these churches were registered as cultural heritage sites in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1985 as a result of a resolution of the 9th session of the World Heritage Committee under the name Painted Churches in the Troodos area .
The entry was made on the basis of criteria (ii), (iii) and (iv).
In 2001 the world heritage site was expanded to include another church.
An expansion planned for 2006 to include two more churches was not discussed by the World Heritage Committee at its 30th meeting because the Republic of Cyprus withdrew the two nominations before the meeting.
scope
The world heritage site consists of 10 areas that encompass the immediate or wider surroundings of the individual churches. In one of these areas, two churches are close to each other, so that a total of 11 churches are part of the world heritage.
