Benjamin James "Ben" Williams (* around 1985 in Washington, DC ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , electric bass , also piano ).

Live and act

Williams graduated from Michigan State University School of Music and graduated from Davey Yarborough's jazz program from Duke Ellington School of the Arts . In New York he worked a. a. with Wynton Marsalis , Terence Blanchard , Mulgrew Miller , Cyrus Chestnut , Stefon Harris , Hamiet Bluiett , James Williams , Bobby Watson , Winard Harper , Buster Williams , John Hicks , Anthony Wonsey and Herbie Hancock . In 2011 he released his debut album State of Art on Concord Records , which combines the jazz of his hometown with R&B, hip-hop and soul influences. He was accompanied by Marcus Strickland (saxophone), Matthew Stevens (guitar), Gerald Clayton (piano) and Jamire Williams (drums). He is currently working with his formation Sound Effect . He also recorded with Marcus Strickland ( Of Song ) and Jacky Terrasson ( Push ). He also played in Sing The Truth , the joint project of Angélique Kidjo , Cécile McLorin Salvant and Lizz Wright . In 2020 he released the album I'm a Man: Mentals .

Prizes and awards

Williams twice won the Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship competition at the East Coast Jazz Festival ; he was also twice winner of the DC Public School Piano Competition and in 2002 received the Duke Ellington Society Annual Scholarship Award . In 2009 he won the Thelonious Monk Competition for Bass with an interpretation of Oscar Pettiford's Tricotism and a duo version of Caravan with vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater . In 2015 he won the Down Beat Critic Polls in the Rising Star category.
