reception
Together with Jenny Krämer, Vallendar published the non-fiction book Life Behind Walls about the everyday life of full-time employees of the State Security , an aspect of GDR history that has not been scientifically researched .
In the Frankfurter Allgemeine, Karl Wilhelm Fricke praised the authors' extensive study of files and only criticized a few editorial flaws - namely imprecise sources and the lack of a bibliography and person index.
Philipp Springer from the Jahn authority, however, complained to H-Soz-Kult that the work did not meet scientific standards. Relevant literature was partially neglected, the chapter structure was misleading, the selection of files was not adequately explained and too many statements were not substantiated. The authors, who provide "a number of interesting sources", however, so the review concluded, "deserve the credit for having shown again the need for further and well-founded, if possible comparative, research into the everyday life of the full-time MfS employees".
