The Are Gymnasium Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is a modern language , general education high school in the spa town of the same name . After extensive renovations , it has been an eight - year all - day school since 2007 .

history

1940s-1960s

The name “Are” goes back to the noble family of the same name , which had its ancestral seat at Are Castle in Altenahr . Are Gymnasium Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler was founded in 1965 with an attached boarding school for boys, which existed until 1980. It emerged from the pedagogy for prospective teachers founded in 1947 ; one of the first new schools to be established after the end of the Nazi dictatorship by the French occupying power of the time . The school and boarding school was initially a hotel that was demolished in 1981 , and today parts of the “Moses” department store with the adjacent parking lot are located on the premises .

1970s - 1980s

Are Gymnasium has maintained school partnerships and exchange programs with schools in France since the early 1970s, and in the mid-1980s with a school in Chicago , USA. Since 1974 the Are Gymnasium has been a full-time school with grades 5 to 13. From 1977, the first prospective high school graduates attended the Mainz study level (MSS). In 1989, a student and parents' initiative prevented the school from being closed before the administrative court took legal action .

1990s until today

In 2018 the Are Gymnasium became a European School , and since 2019 it has been a Fair Trade school. Every year in June the school celebrates its traditional Midsummer Festival .
