Benjamin von Block , also Benjamin Blok (* 1631 in Lübeck , † 1689 in Regensburg ) was a German portrait painter.

Life

Block was probably an apprentice to his father Daniel Block , as did his brothers Emmanuel and Adolf. In 1653 he lived in Halle, Belgium, and from there went to Vienna to see his brother. There he met the Hungarian Count Franz Nádasdy . In 1653 he went with him to Hungary at his invitation and lived there for three years. In 1659 he went to Rome , where he worked as a portraitist of the nobility and also visited Florence , Venice and Siena . In the early 1660s he settled in Nuremberg and Regensburg. He created an entire picture gallery for Emperor Leopold I. Block was one of the first to the new technique of mezzotint anwandte. He soon became one of the most popular and busiest portraitists of his time.

Block was married to the flower painter Anna Catherina von Block .
